July 28, 2020

Is a recent bout of flu causing you to feel under the weather? There are times when the flu feels serious enough to make us feel uncomfortable, yet doesn’t warrant a trip to the doctor. When this happens, organic remedies can help relieve symptoms and banish the flu in its early stages.

In TCM, there are two types of flu with varying symptoms.

                    Wind-cold

  • Runny nose with yellow mucus
  • Cough with yellow phlegm
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Thirsty
  • Yellow urine
  • Runny nose with clear mucus
  • Cough with clear phlegm
  • Cold
  • Chills
  • Fever

Once you’ve identified the type of flu you’re having, we can start to look at remedies you can make at home to take care of yourself.

Organic Remedies for Wind-heat Flu

Organic remedies for wind-heat flu focus on cooling and expelling heat out of the body. Consider these recipes to make yourself more comfortable.

Chrysanthemum and Peppermint Tea

Boil 6g of chrysanthemum and 3g of peppermint in 400ml of water for 2-3 minutes. Add sugar as desired to taste. This soothing tea will help relieve common flu symptoms of wind-heat flu like sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches and fever. Drink warm for twice a day until your flu subsides.

Organic Remedies for Wind-cold Flu

Organic remedies for wind-cold flu focus on sweating to dispel cold out of the body. These recipes, along with warm clothes to sweat out pathogens will help relieve symptoms.

Ginger Tea

Clean and shred 15g of fresh ginger into 200ml of boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. Add sugar as needed for taste. You can drink ginger tea twice a day to help alleviate the symptoms of wind-cold flu. Not only does it increase your appetite, it’ll also improve blood circulation and relieve congestion.

While all these remedies will help you find relief from flu symptoms, prevention is always better than cure! Keep your body’s immune system strong with daily exercise, enough sleep and drink water regularly to keep yourself hydrated. Supplementing your diet with TCM herbal teas is also a great way to ensure your body is functioning optimally.
